OFF Grid Solar System

Off Grid Solar System :

An off Grid Solar system is standalone system and completely disconnected from traditional electric power grid. These systems typically require battery bank (group of batteries) to store solar electricity for use. In all off grid systems power usage must be kept below the maximum output of the panels and batteries as there is no grid source to supply the excess power. The stored energy from batteries is usually converted to AC power by an invertor. Small systems just use the DC power direct from batteries. Commonly used in remote areas where there is no grid supply or areas where there are electricity more than 5-6 hours.

Benefit

  • May be the only option where mains electricity is not available
  • Can be cheaper than connecting to the grid in more remote areas
  • Negates the need to purchase electricity from a retail supplier
  • Off grid solar systems can be designed to power single items only (e.g. – water pumps, large appliances and solar hot water systems)
  • May be the only option where mains electricity is not available
  • Can use as backup when there is electricity failure. cheaper than diesel run generators in remote areas
  • Off grid solar systems can be designed to power different items individually (e.g. – water pumps, large appliances and solar hot water systems)

Drawbacks

  • More expensive than Gid tie system.
  • Require large rooftop sunny area for installation of solar panels .
  • Require use of backup batteries which last upto 5 years.
  • High ongoing maintenance.
  • Larger space requirement for batteries.
